SURIOL/AZIMUT
ASSIS SURIOL + FAMILY

Suriol is a 400 year old winemaking family 60km's west of Barcelona in the Alt Penedès area of Catalonia, with 17th generation vigneron, Assís Suriol, at the helm. The Suriols operate out of their ancient Gabruac Castle cellars. They've remained true to tradition for centuries, such that today their wines are championed by the Natural Wine movement as an artifact of classical wine. They are leaders in organic and biodynamic farming in their area and sculptors of serene cavas and still wines of place and substance.

Suriol also tends 3 hectares of arbequina olive trees and a well-loved flock of sheep that graze their vineyards. Suriol's wines are thought provoking experiences that seem to demand your attention, quite unlike the cheap n' cheerful Cavas we often see from Catalonia. They are mineral driven and already showing tertiary notes of age upon release. These wines keep us on our toes and coming back for more, trying to put words to the unique aromas and sensations they offer.

A super important part of Suriol’s natural approach is their Azimut project, named after the Arabic word for direction. And the direction here is clear: promoting organic agriculture! Using their export network as well as connections to local farmers, Assis & co. have created a brand of fun, easy-drinking wines made from their own and certified organic grapes that they purchase from their neighbors, thus encouraging them to pursue respectful viticulture. Based on typical local grapes and the Mediterranean diet and lifestyle, these wines are the perfect everyday dash of joy and color that can be enjoyed, as Assis would say, with a clear conscience.
